The 3-Second Pause That Changes Every Rate Negotiation
Here’s something almost no one tells freelancers: the moment a client asks “what do you charge?”, the person who speaks first usually loses. Not because of some negotiation trick just because silence feels uncomfortable, and whoever fills it first tends to undersell themselves to end the discomfort.
I learned this the hard way. Early in my freelance career, a client asked my rate and I panicked mid-sentence, dropped my number by 20%, and justified it out loud before they’d even responded. They hadn’t pushed back. I did it to myself.
The fix isn’t complicated, but it takes practice: when someone asks your rate, say the number, then stop talking. Let three full seconds pass before you say anything else. No justifying, no “but I can be flexible,” no filling the silence.
A few things that help this land better:
- Practice saying your rate out loud before the call, so it doesn’t feel unfamiliar in the moment
- Write your rate down somewhere visible during calls, so you’re reading it, not inventing it live
- If the silence feels unbearable, count it in your head most people can’t sit with silence longer than five seconds
Get the number right. Then say it, and let the silence do some of the work for you.
